Alphonse Elric |
How does a person know themselves—their body, their age, their history? When their mother died suddenly in their childhood, the Elric brothers (then ten and eleven years old) made the choice to try and resurrect her using the taboo alchemical art of human transmutation. The attempt failed and the boys learned what other older and more experienced alchemists had learned before them: that the taboo was in place for a reason. Ed, Al's elder brother, lost his leg; Al lost his whole body. When he came to, he discovered that he was now to exist inside a suit of armor to which Ed had bound his soul in a last-ditch effort to prevent him disappearing from the world all together. The binding cost Ed his right arm. Al spent four years in that form, as a suit of armor with no body, his soul bound to it by a blood sigil. Once Ed had recovered from his wounds and received automail replacements for his lost limbs, the brothers made a pact that they would do whatever it took each to return the other to his original form. To that end, the boys traveled from their rural homeland to the capitol city to become State Alchemists—a prestigious title, but one that would allow them access to otherwise-restricted research at the expense of their inscription in the military. At twelve years old, Ed became the youngest person ever to pass the State Alchemist exam, but because he had no body, Ed made the request that Al not go through the testing. The brothers remained together, however, searching the country for a way to make the Philosopher's Stone and thereby accomplish their goal. What they could not anticipate was what the cost for transmuting such a stone might be, nor were either of them willing to sacrifice thousands of human lives in order to accomplish their ambitions. Their work thus became the necessary opposition to the Stone's creation, though in the end they could not prevent its making: by the machinations of a man called Scar, the Philosopher's Stone was transmuted inside of Al's body so that he became it, and it existed inside and as a part of him. No surprise, then, that those who had sought the Stone now wanted Al to use for their own ends. But each time the Stone was used for a transmutation, they learned, a bit of it would be used up and before long Al would disappear. In the end, Al made the choice himself: when his brother was killed by the homunculus Envy, Al brought Ed back and made his body whole again at the expense of his own existence. Ed then returned the deed in kind, rejoining Al's soul and body from within the Gate and returning them to their world. The cost? The body that Al returned in was the one that he had lost: ten years old and whole. He had none of his memories though—nothing since the night that they'd tried to revive their mother. And although Al steadfastly believed his brother was still alive, Ed vanished in the transmutation that brought him back to life. After two years of study, Al finally learned of his brothers whereabouts—on another world, Earth, in a country reeling from the after-effects of one war and bracing for the outbreak of a second—and a way to bring him back. When the smoke cleared, however, it was Al who had finally crossed through the Gate to Earth, his lost memories returning to him at last, as he was finally able to stand side by side with his brother, in his own skin and with his own knowledge. |
